CMake is widely used by both commercial and open-source projects. Many developers therefore find themselves working on a project's CMake infrastructure without being familiar with CMake, having to learn from reading such CMake code itself. This can be a frustrating exercise, as the code commonly embodies outdated practices, and some CMake concepts can be hard to grasp from code alone.
This talk aims to put such CMake knowledge on a firmer foundation. We will introduce modern CMake usage principles, starting from the basics. We will also look at which approaches preceded the modern ones and why they are now outdated.
The goal is to establish a solid understanding of CMake terminology and concepts, which can also serve as a good starting point for further study. CMake offers extensive reference documentation showing the "how," so we will focus on "what" to look for in there and "why."
